For people installing CFMX 6.1 as an upgrade and have their existing ColdFusion instance installed to “C:\Program Files”, there is a gotcha in the installation. CFMX 6.1 will upgrade and appear to work fine, but after installation you will encounter problems with some functions.
The CFMX 6.1 installer will not warn you for an upgrade installation and the resulting errors are not indicative of the problem (such as Data source not found for MS Access verification). For upgrades where CF is currently installed to a directory with spaces in it, you need to uninstall the existing version and then install CFMX 6.1 as a new install to a directory without spaces in the name.
Using 8.3 file names does not fix the problems, so installations to “C:\Progra~1\Macromedia\ColdFusionMX” will still be problematic.
For new installations, CFMX 6.1 will not allow you to install to a directory with spaces in the name.
This is mentioned as the number one item in “Installation Notes” in the release notes, but apparently not everyone reads the release notes.
If you currently have CF installed to a directory with spaces in the name and have to uninstall/reinstall to upgrade to CFMX 6.1, I would encourage you to tell Macromedia about it so they can decide what priority to give this bug in a future update. It’s not even listed as a Known Issue, so I’m not sure if Macromedia currently considers this a bug.
